Eduardo Ramrez (25-2-3, 12 KOs) defeated Isaac Avelar (17-3, 10 KOs) in the third round of their fight for the vacant WBA interim featherweight title on Saturday night at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Avelar was sent to the canvas by Ramirez’s short right hand.
Ramirez continued his attack after Avelar beat the count.
Avelar was stunned by another short right, which sat him on the ropes, and the referee saved him by stopping the fight at 1:16.
“You have to have a stone-cold mindset, and that’s what we needed to finish, Avelar,” Ramirez said.
“We were able to put together the right combinations to finish the fight the way we wanted.”
“Right now, I’m overjoyed. I’m just overjoyed and moved that I was able to keep my promise to my baby boy Eduardo Ramirez Jr.
I could not give him a hug on his two-year birthday because I could not be present, but I promised him that I would return the title to him as a gift, and that is what I am doing now. This coronation was flawless.
I want the opportunity to fight Leo Santa Cruz right now. I had previously fought Miguel Flores, who lasted only four or five rounds against me before being knocked out by Leo. This enticing knockout should be my ticket to getting that chance.”
