On Thursday (May 6), Netflix released a new trailer for Stranger Things season four, and it appears that we’ll be delving into Eleven’s world.
The gang battled the Mind Flayer at the Starcourt Mall at the end of season three, and fans were left wondering if Jim Hopper (David Harbour) survived the massive explosion. (Spoiler alert: he did, as revealed in the previous teaser trailer, which was released in February 2020. Unfortunately for him, he is currently imprisoned in Russia.)
The new 70-second clip begins with a close-up of a clock about to strike 3 p.m. Then we see groups of children with buzz cuts and hospital gowns playing games and solving puzzles in a large, sterile-looking room with a rainbow-colored wall.
A grey-haired man, whose face we don’t see, walks in and greets the children, who respond, “Good morning, Papa.” As the camera pans to one of the rooms outside with the number 11 on the door, he tells them he has something special planned for them.
The trailer concludes with Eleven, as played by Millie Bobby Brown, wide-eyed as a voice asks, “Eleven, are you listening?” Dr. Martin Brenner (played by Matthew Modine), who had been experimenting on test subjects at the Hawkins National Laboratory, including Eleven herself, is the voice that is assumed to belong to Papa.
It’s unclear whether the scene is a flashback to Eleven’s time at the facility or something that’s happening to her right now. The two trailers were released more than a year apart because COVID-19 disrupted production, and the crew was only able to film for two weeks at the start of 2020. Work has been resumed since September.
There’s no word on when the latest season of the streaming service’s monster hit will be released, but there’s reason to believe it will be sooner rather than later, especially now that we have a new trailer. For the time being, we do know that new cast members are joining the show this season, which was announced in November.
These include Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, who will play Victor Creel, a “disturbed and intimidating man” at a psychiatric hospital. Jamie Campbell Bower, a caring orderly at the psychiatric hospital; and Eduardo Franco, a pizza delivery guy, and Jonathan’s (Charlie Heaton) best friend.
The rest of the main cast includes Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Joe Keery, Winona Ryder, and Maya Hawke, in addition to Heaton.
